Dr. Enamul Hoque Prince

Principal Investigator

Enamul Hoque Prince is an Associate Professor at the School of Information Technology, York University. He directs the Intelligent Visualization Lab funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and Ontario Research Funds (ORF). Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow in Computer Science at Stanford University. His research unites Natural Language Processing and Information Visualization—two fields that have historically evolved separately—to establish a new frontier in language-based data interaction and reasoning. His work advances this frontier through multimodal AI and agentic systems, making data analytics more accessible, inclusive, and trustworthy. It has produced widely adopted benchmarks and models—including ChartQA, Chart-to-Text, UniChart, and ChartGemma—that have helped shape the emerging field of multimodal AI for data visualization and have been adopted by leading AI organizations, including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, for evaluating frontier vision-language models.

Dr. Prince has published nearly 100 papers in premier venues spanning AI, visualization, and human-computer interaction, including ACL, EMNLP, IEEE VIS, CHI, and UIST. His work has received numerous recognitions, including the IEEE VIS Best Short Paper Award, ACM DIS Best Paper Honorable Mention, CVPR Workshop Best Paper Award, and York University’s Dean’s Award for Distinction in Research. He has delivered numerous invited talks and organized tutorials and panels at leading international conferences, including IEEE VIS, EMNLP, and EACL. He serves as an Area Chair for the ACL Rolling Review, is a member of the IEEE VIS Program Committee, and is a Senior Member of IEEE. He is also a member of Connected Minds, the Centre for AI & Society, and the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York University. His research has been supported by NSERC, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the National Research Council Canada, and industry partners.

Professional Leadership

  • Established foundational benchmarks and models for chart reasoning in multimodal AI through ChartQA, ChartQAPro, Chart2Text, OpenCQA, UniChart and ChartGemma, achieving 750K+ downloads and adoption by leading AI systems including GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini.
  • Nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications across premier venues in NLP (ACL, EMNLP, COLM), Visualization (IEEE VIS, EuroVis), and HCI (CHI, UIST, IUI).
  • 6 U.S. patents spanning visualization, conversational analytics, and AI-assisted data interaction.
  • Recipient of the IEEE VIS Best Short Paper Award, CVPR Workshop Best Paper Award, ACM DIS Honorable Mention Award, and Dean’s Award for Distinction in Research at York Univ.
  • Principal Investigator on $1.1M+ in competitive research funding from NSERC, CFI, NRC Canada, and industry partners.
  • Founder and Director of the Intelligent Visualization Lab, supervising nearly 40 trainees and an interdisciplinary research program spanning NLP, Visualization, and Multimodal AI.
  • Served as Area Chair for ACL Rolling Review, IEEE VIS Program Committee member, and organizer of 9 tutorials, panels, and workshops at top venues including IEEE VIS, EMNLP, and EACL.
